Cast Aluminum, Plastic, Plywood
2016

This was a project for my Sculpture class. A mold was made from a pair of free sunglasses which was then cast in aluminum through an investment casting process. The original lenses were kept, ground and fit into the casted sunglasses. A base for the sunglasses was designed and created out of plywood.
The assignment for this art project was to create a trophy for something that isn’t often awarded. The concept behind these sunglasses was to create a trophy about “keeping your cool” in stressful or difficult situations. Sunglasses being one of the symbols of “coolness” I thought it was appropriate to take a inexpensive product and recreate it in a (relatively more) expensive material.
